It's a question we hear all the time! "Can I just plug in one of those ultrasonic pest repellers instead of having pest control?"
Sure, why not? But it won't get rid of your insect and rodent problem!!
Unfortunately, the science behind ultrasonic pest repellers is ultra-shaky. Seems like an attractive idea though, right? Just plug a charger-sized device emitting undetectable sound into the wall, wait about 2 weeks, then wallop!, your home is insect and rodent free without the use of chemical pesticides or traps. Sounds great! Too bad these devices have never been proven to actually work. But let’s take a look at the theory anyway.
Ultrasonic pest repeller's emit high-frequency sound waves that are claimed to drive away rodents and insects. While some laboratory studies have shown a short-term effect, actual results are very different. Rats and mice quickly become used to the sound, and the devices have little to no lasting impact on established infestations.
There's another catch: ultrasonic waves don't pass through walls, furniture, cupboards or even around corners. That means much of your home or business isn't actually being covered.
Professional pest controllers don't rely on ultrasonic devices because there's no strong evidence they provide effective control. Instead, professional pest management focuses on identifying how pests are getting in, removing food and water sources, sealing entry points, and using targeted treatments where they're needed.
If you've already got an infestation, an ultrasonic device is unlikely to solve the problem on its own. Many regulatory bodies and consumer protection agencies have investigated or issued warnings regarding these devices due to false advertising.
